Photofacials or Photo Rejuvenation is an IPL treatment that is used to rejuvenate many conditions on the face and body. The IPL (Photo Rejuvenation) treatment offered at Chameleon Medical Spa utilizes intense pulses of light to penetrate below the skin to stimulate production of collagen.
Radiant skin is soft, smooth, and even in texture; however, it’s common to have skin that feels rough and uneven. This can be due to skin conditions such as rosacea, broken blood vessels, or acne, but it can also be caused by aging, sun damage, or other environmental factors that have damaged the skin. Photo Rejuvenation is an excellent non-invasive facial renewal that will leave your skin with a healthy, vibrant, and even skin tone.
What is PhotoRejuvenation or PhotoFacial?
A Photo Rejuvenation treatment uses the power of broadband light to minimize the appearance of age spots, sunspots, acne scars, rosacea, and more. A handheld device will be passed over the target area, delivering precise pulses of intense light (IPL) to penetrate the layers of the skin. The light penetrates the dermal layer of the skin to repair the damaged areas and to stimulate new collagen. Some patients describe the treatment as a “pinching” sensation that is not painful. Most patients describe experiencing a fast, pinching sensation during treatment, with minimal discomfort. There is no downtime.*
PhotoFacial can improve your skin tone and skin elasticity with the reduction of pore size. Photo rejuvenation can also treat acne, and it is often sought after as an alternative treatment option because of its ability to clear up skin with just a few treatments!*
What Skin Conditions Does Photo Rejuvenation or IPL Treat?
PhotoFacials are used to treat a variety of skin conditions including:
- Active acne
- Brown spots
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Hyperpigmentation
- Redness due to rosacea
- Enlarged pores
- Scars
- Sun spots
- Uneven skin texture
Over time Photo Rejuvenation treatments tighten lax skin. Individuals are advised to wait to get their IPL treatment if they had a recent suntan or sun burn. Due to the fact IPL is attracted to brown pigmentation, there is some risk for darker skins tones. Dr. Boyd and Chameleon’s aesthetician will discuss if you are a candidate for IPL treatments.
What is the Photo Rejuvenation Treatment Process and Recovery?
PhotoFacial treatment times vary depending on the condition being treated. Typically, a series of treatments is required to achieve desired optimal results. Most patients require a series of 1 – 3 treatments at 4–6-week intervals.* During your consultation, Chameleon’s skin care specialist will determine how many treatments will be needed to provide you with your desired rejuvenation and skin renewal goals.
After your IPL procedure, the targeted areas will be slightly pink or red and somewhat swollen. These effects will begin to dissipate after 24 hours. A facial is recommended a few weeks after your final treatment to remove any dead skin cells.*
Photo Rejuvenation Treats a Variety of Skin Conditions and Imperfections as Follows:
Rosacea & Flushing
Rosacea is a common facial skin condition that causes primarily causes flushing and skin redness. Dependent upon the extent of rosacea, small, red, pus-filled bumps (acne) may appear on the face. Some patients also exhibit spider veins and a swollen nose due to thickening of the skin, skin sensitivity and itching. Rosacea is seen commonly in women of fair complexions.
Fine lines occur due to the irregular thickening of the dermis and a decrease in the amount of water held by the epidermis. This is mainly caused by sun damage and overexposure to environmental toxins, most specifically tobacco smoke.
Wrinkles and folds often form because of the following factors, though the severity depends on the individual’s genetic tendency and exposure to environmental factors:
- Aging
- Sun damage
- Muscle movement
- Gravity
- Acne
- Other skin diseases with a tendency to scar
- Smoking
Hyperpigmentation is a common and mostly harmless condition where patches of skin become darker in color than the other, normal surrounding skin area. This condition occurs when an excess of melanin, which is the brown pigment that produces our normal skin color, forms deposits inside the skin.
Similar to hyperpigmentation in both appearance and occurrence, sun spots (solar lentigines) are darker or lighter areas and usually occur in different shapes and colors. As the name indicates, they normally occur on areas of the skin that are regularly exposed to sun, most often on your nose, cheeks, upper lip, ears, forehead, neck, arms, back of your hands. They sometimes look like raised warts, scaly or rough skin lesion and can cause slight itching.
This condition occurs when one or more blood vessel bursts resulting in a small amount of blood escaping from the vessel and into the affected area of the body. The resulting blood sometimes shows up just beneath the surface of the skin and is visible to the eye, creating an unpleasant look. Blood vessels burst for many different reasons, but it is mostly caused by impact or injuries.
Capillaries typically appear around the chin, nose and cheeks. Like all facial conditions mentioned above, broken capillaries are caused from a variety of reasons, some which can be prevented from occurring. The most common cause of broken capillaries is due to damage to the skin from overexposure to the sun and excess dilation from a source of inflammation or irritation. In addition, vigorous scrubbing of the skin can further aggravate sensitive areas, which will result in worsening the development of broken capillaries.
